Please use the above link to submit requests for Credit for Prior Learning.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom. Credit for prior learning may be earned for eligible courses approved by the faculty for students who satisfactorily pass an authorized assessment.

Authorized assessments may include:

  • Military Service Credit (JST military transcripts) evaluation
  • Industry Certification/Accreditation or License evaluation
  • Student-Created Portfolio Review
  • Credit by Examination
  • College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) exam scores evaluation

Credits acquired through the Credit for Prior Learning process shall not be counted in determining the 12 semester hours of credit in residence required for an Associate degree (Title 5 §) and are not applicable to meeting semester unit load requirements (i.e., full-time status, Veteran’s or Social Security benefits, financial aid, etc.).

Students should meet with a Counselor for specific information regarding CPL and the petition process. For more information see: Santa Rosa Junior College District Administrative Procedure on Credit for Prior Learning (AP 4235)

ASE Credentials

For the ATL program, having an active ASE in an area that a course is preparing for, would be a clear demonstration of both knowledge in the area and 2 years experience in the field.

Other Industry Experience

Other options could be OEM training from vehicle manufactures, to include a clear knowledge match to the Course Outline of Record for the course requesting credit for.

Example

A CPL for ATL 280 Medium Heavy Truck Preventive Maintenance Inspection would need to include documentation the following information:

  • Meet the Student Learning Outcomes
    • Perform maintenance inspections on agricultural, construction, public transportation, and (or) trucking equipment.
    • Evaluate equipment condition and determine repair options.
  • Meet the Objectives
    • Describe maintenance and inspection procedures for diesel-powered equipment.
    • Evaluate symptoms of potential machine failure.
    • Perform and assess preventive maintenance inspections on the following:
      • tracks, tires, and wheels
      • engine and powertrain components
      • electrical/electronic components
      • chassis and undercarriage components.
    • Evaluate conditions and determine repair options.
    • Utilize digital media for service information.
    • Discuss and apply personal, shop, and environmental safety procedures.

This would require a portfolio or support documentation showing a clear connection between industry experience and the course outcomes and objectives.
